Love is undeniably in the air during the Season 3 finale of “Night Court,” as seen in the romantic tale between “Sylvia Plath” (played by Raegan Revord, who fittingly is pursuing a writing career) and “Batman” (portrayed by Charlie Korman). These two teenagers flee from home and appear before Abby Stone’s (Melissa Rauch) courtroom. Caught with phony IDs, they explain their wish to get married. Abby dissuades them from marrying young and warns them about the perils of being poor and wed at a young age, but they remain determined to stay together.

This scenario might ring a bell for fans of the “Big Bang Theory” franchise, particularly those familiar with Missy Cooper’s (also Revord) storyline, as it has unfolded during and beyond “Young Sheldon.” Within the debut season of “Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage,” a defiant Missy runs off with Todd (Jackson Kelly), the offspring of the titular couple’s adversaries, in the episode titled “Two Idiots on a Dirtbike.” They head off to marry in Mexico, but Missy has a change of heart upon realizing Todd’s immaturity.

In “Night Court,” it’s only when Abby consents to marry “Sylvia” and “Batman” that “Sylvia” relents and confesses she orchestrated the situation to persuade her parents to revise her curfew terms. Consequently, the wedding is promptly canceled. “Sylvia” later reveals to Abby that her real name is Shelby, while “Batman’s” real name is, in fact, Batman. She expresses gratitude to the judge for dissuading her from the marriage. The similarity between Shelby and Missy is quite evident — and Revord acknowledges she recognized this resemblance immediately.

Raegan Revord notes Shelby’s similarity to Missy

Raegan Revord said that she noticed some unifying circumstances between Missy’s rebellion and what “Sylvia”/Shelby is going through. “She was kind of similar to Missy, but in her own fresh way, which was really fun, and I loved it,” she told ScreenRant. But Shelby is no total clone of Missy; Revord added that she enjoyed being on a different set, playing a different character, and working with new actors.

There was apparently one major benefit to playing Shelby, she noted — getting to step out into the modern world and play a teenager who wasn’t living in the 1980s or 1990s. “The fun thing about playing Sylvia was that it was set in modern day, which I’ve never really done before. That was fun because I didn’t have to wear the itchy ’80s clothing or anything,” she told Bleeding Cool. Perhaps someday Shelby can come back to Judge Stone’s chambers — if only so Revord can play a kid from the 2020s.
