Plans for Mother’s Day picnics in some parts of Australia may require a rethink, with isolated showers forecast.

Forecasters say a large ridge of high pressure over the country’s south will keep conditions dry for most capital cities on Sunday.

Many families celebrating can also look forward to pleasant temperatures, ranging from the low to mid twenties.

But rain is expected to impact a large part of eastern Australia on Sunday, between central NSW northern Queensland.

Families in Sydney can expect a showery Mother’s Day with temperatures peaking at 22 degrees, while in Brisbane, the maximum will reach 24 degrees. However, there will likely be breaks in the rain in both cities.

Computer modelling points to heavy rain over northern Queensland, but there’s no consensus about how big the falls will be.

Southern regions of Western Australia, south-west Tasmania and the Northern Territory’s east should also expect showers.

The good news is forecasters say no extreme weather will disrupt Mother’s Day.

Here’s the forecast and maximum temperatures for the other state and territory capitals: Melbourne will be sunny with 23 degrees; Perth will enjoy sunny skies at 28 degrees; Adelaide will see mostly sunny weather with 24 degrees; Canberra can expect sunshine and 20 degrees; Hobart will be cloudy at 19 degrees; and Darwin will have mostly sunny conditions with a high of 33 degrees.
