A jury in Arizona has found Lori Vallow Daybell guilty of conspiring to kill her fourth husband.

According to NBC News, jurors in Maricopa County reached a verdict on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, convicting the defendant of planning the shooting that resulted in Charles Vallow’s death on July 11, 2019. In the courtroom, Vallow Daybell defended herself, asserting that her brother, Alex Cox, acted in self-defense when he shot Mr. Vallow.

In her closing arguments, she doubled down on her stance that Charles Vallow’s homicide was merely a tragedy, not a crime.

The jury took just 18 minutes to deliberate on Monday and then spent less than three hours the following day before making their decision, as detailed by East Idaho News.

What was Lori Vallow Daybell convicted of?

More than five years after the fatal incident at her Chandler, Arizona, residence near Phoenix, Vallow Daybell was found guilty of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder regarding the death of her estranged husband.

During the recent trial, Vallow Daybell claimed a fight started between Charles Vallow and her 16-year-old daughter, Tylee Ryan, and that Cox fatally shot his brother-in-law in self-defense.

Weeks later, Vallow moved with her relatives, including Ryan and Charles Vallow’s adopted 7-year-old son, Joshua “J.J.” Vallow, to Idaho, where she joined future husband, Chad Daybell.

The children disappeared separately in September 2019, and in October 2019, Chad Daybell’s wife, Tammy Daybell, died under mysterious circumstances. Alex Cox — who admitted to shooting Charles Vallow to death — died in December 2019 from an apparent pulmonary embolism and was never charged in connection to any of the deaths.

Ryan and J.J. Vallow’s bodies were discovered crudely buried on Chad Daybell’s Rexburg, Idaho property, about 300 miles east of Boise, in June 2020.

Husband and wife were convicted of murdering Ryan, J.J. Vallow, and Tammy Daybell.

Charles Vallows’ loved ones speak out

Tuesday’s guilty verdict brought an overwhelming sense of relief to Charles Vallow’s loved ones, as well as those close to the defendant’s other victims, according to NBC News.

“Today’s a good day,” said the victim’s brother, Gerry Vallow. “We won.”

Vallow’s sister, Kay Woodcock — the biological grandmother of J.J. Vallow — said, “She’ll be rotting in prison where she deserves to be.”

During the recent trial, prosecutors claimed Vallow Daybell had her brother kill Charles Vallow to cash in on a million-dollar life insurance policy and live out her dreams with Chad Daybell. At the time of Charles Vallow’s death, Vallow Daybell had already been engrossed in Chad Daybell’s teachings, rooted in prophetic End Times beliefs and spawning several books on the fringes of the Mormon religion.

As revealed following the children’s disappearances, Vallow Daybell reportedly referred to her kids as “zombies” who’d become “possessed,” lending to media outlets dubbing her “Doomsday mom.” Prosecutors and witnesses in the recent murder trial said Vallow Daybell thought the same of Charles Vallow.

Following the recent verdict, some jurors didn’t think Vallow Daybell helped herself acting as her own attorney, according to The Associated Press.

“Many days she was just smiling and laughing and didn’t seem to take anything very seriously,” juror Victoria Lewis told reporters.

What does the recent guilty verdict mean for Lori Vallow Daybell?

Lori Vallow Daybell now faces a life sentence after being found guilty of conspiring to kill Charles Vallow, which would make it her fourth. She is already serving life in prison in Idaho for the murders of her children and Tammy Daybell.

However, sentencing in Arizona is not expected to take place until she goes to trial in May for the October 2019 attempted shooting of Brandon Boudreaux, as reported by The Associated Press. As previously reported by Oxygen, Boudreaux, the ex-husband of Vallow Daybell’s niece, reported seeing Alex Cox pull the trigger from a parked Jeep as part of a failed drive-by at the victim’s Gilbert, Arizona home.

Boudreaux was unharmed, and Cox would die weeks later before he could be charged.

In that case, Lori Vallow Daybell pleaded not guilty to conspiracy murder charges.
