A Myrtle Beach police officer was deemed justified in using deadly force to prevent a man from firing into a crowd on Ocean Boulevard last month, according to a statement by the agency.

On Friday, the Myrtle Beach Police Department released reports regarding the incident that occurred on April 16 at 913 S. Ocean Blvd. The event resulted in the death of 18-year-old Jerrius Davis from Bennettsville and injuries to 11 others.

During the confrontation, an individual began shooting, which prompted an officer to respond with gunfire due to the immediate threat, as noted in the incident report. The person shot by the officer succumbed to the injuries sustained.

The report doesn’t name which officer fired at Davis. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating, as is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting.

The confrontation was at least the 25th instance of gun violence along Ocean Boulevard since 2020, according to a News13 analysis.

Officials said days after the shooting that three officers are on paid leave.
