Firefighters from Central Illinois, as well as a few from other states, converged on Danville over the weekend for a significant training exercise. They honed essential skills and engaged in scenarios that pushed them to think creatively.
This training occurred on Saturday at the location near Harmon Street and Logan Avenue. The event hosted approximately 40 firefighters from various places, including Champaign, Urbana, Danville, Tilton, Sibley, and from states like Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Indiana. These participants practiced scenarios involving victims trapped in confined spaces.

Ryan Allison, the training captain at the Danville Fire Department, explained that the course they undertook is named VES Beyond the Door. This course aims to challenge firefighters to depart from their routine training to locate trapped victims. It also leverages their experience, statistical data, and an understanding of building construction to help predict where victims are most often found.
The training simulates situations like how to deal with victim removal issues, how to deal with access problems, and deciding if conditions allow the search to continue beyond the door.
