Arun Subramanian serves as a judge on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. His nomination by Democratic President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. occurred on January 23, 2023, following the vacancy left by Judge Alison Julie Nathan, who had been promoted to the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. The U.S. Senate confirmed Subramanian on March 7, 2023, and he officially took on his role on April 13, 2023.

Prior to being a judge, Subramanian was a partner at Susman Godfrey LLP from 2011 – 2023 and an associate from 2007 – 2011.

Subramanian clerked for the esteemed Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the Supreme Court of the United States in Washington, DC, from 2006 to 2007. He shared with Columbia Law School that the pivotal moment in deciding to become a judge came in 2020 after Ginsburg’s passing, as he stood among other former clerks outside the Supreme Court while she lay in repose.

Additionally, he clerked for the Honorable Gerard E. Lynch at the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York from 2005 to 2006 and for the Honorable Dennis Jacobs at the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 2004 to 2005.

Subramanian earned a B.A. from Case Western Reserve University in 2001 and a J.D. from Columbia Law School in 2004.
