Contains spoilers for “Chicago P.D.” Season 12, Episode 21 and 22 — “Open Casket” and “Vows”

“Chicago P.D.” is nearing its climax, with the Season 12 finale scheduled for next week. Throughout the season, fans have been eagerly awaiting a Burzek wedding, and while it seems set to occur, recent events suggest it won’t be a seamless journey for the couple. In the episode “Open Casket,” Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) faces suspension from the police force, casting doubt on what appeared to be a promising future.

The unraveling of Kim’s situation is largely due to Deputy Chief Reid (Shawn Hatosy), a corrupt officer known to Hank Voight (Jason Beghe). Reid is involved with gangs and uses insider knowledge about Torres’ (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) affair with the late informant Gloria Perez (Yara Martinez), along with the team’s awareness of it, to manipulate Hank. However, Hank has a potential advantage with Jesus Otero (Juan Javier Cardenas), a drug dealer who seems poised to betray Reid.

Unfortunately, by the episode’s conclusion, Otero ends up dead, the Intelligence Unit faces an internal affairs investigation, and Torres finds himself under arrest. While Burgess manages to narrowly avoid arrest, losing her job certainly overshadows the wedding plans. Could this mean that Kim and Adam Ruzek’s (Patrick John Flueger) happiness is fleeting?

The wedding appears to be approaching

Kim and Adam’s wedding has been promised, but the preview trailer for “Vows,” the season finale, definitely hints that something might be amiss. With Intelligence facing a full investigation, and careers and lives up in the air, the couple might end up hitting the brakes. While there are definitely images out there of the two of them entering into wedded bliss, “Chicago P.D.” could always throw fans a curveball and have something untoward happen to the pair.

Multiple people connected to “Chicago P.D.,” including showrunner Gwen Sigan, insist that the couple will wed in Season 12, and will never again be pulled asunder. “Yes, there will be happiness, I promise … They are going to make it down the aisle this season,” she vowed back in January to ScreenRant. Can fans take Sigan at her word or will there be a sudden, terrible twist? “Vows” will settle that score once and for all.
