A truck driver faces charges after approximately 840 kilograms of metal fragments were spilled on a major road in NSW, causing damage to the tyres of over 300 vehicles.

The spill resulted in major traffic delays before the major road was reopened almost 10 hours later.

Many of the vehicles with tyre damage were stopped in the breakdown lane.

There were no reports of any injuries.

Police said officers spoke with the driver of the vehicle, a heavy vehicle tipper towing a trailer, about the matter on the day of the incident.

Authorities will assert that the trailer’s secondary locking handles were inadequately secured, leading to the spill of roughly 840 kilograms of metal across approximately 30 kilometers of the roadway.

The 46-year-old man was served with a future court attendance notice for driving a heavy vehicle not complying with loading requirements.

He is due to appear at Hornsby Local Court in July.
