Finance experts have re-emphasised the importance of playing the superannuation "long game" as the ASX climbed for the sixth straight day yesterday.

The Australian Taxation Office has issued a warning over dodgy websites claiming the age people can access superannuation will increase to 70.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has confirmed that the age at which Australians can access their superannuation savings upon retirement remains set at 60 and will not undergo changes starting next month.

Misinformation claiming that the re-elected Labor government would alter the superannuation preservation age by extending it by 10 years prompted the ATO to issue this reminder.

Deputy commissioner of the ATO Emma Rosenzweig says the claims were “classic fake news”.

“It is important to verify the source of the information you come across. When uncertain, refer to reliable sources such as the ATO website, your superannuation fund’s website, a registered tax agent, or a licensed financial adviser,” she stated.

“Beware of websites that might be trying to harvest your personal information such as your TFN, identity details or myGov login details.

“Think twice before acting on information heard from third-party sources, including non-official websites or on social media.”

The ATO is also warning people to be wary about offers of free expert tax advice from individuals or companies.

You should ensure anyone who proposes helping with tax affairs is a practising lawyer or registered with the Tax Practitioners Board.
