Manchester United lost their 17th Premier League match of the season on Sunday as West Ham United secured a 2-0 victory away, which means United cannot finish higher than 13th.

Ruben Amorim has previously commented that United’s domestic campaign has been an unqualified disaster, and there was once again little to celebrate at a sun-bathed Old Trafford.

Goals in each half by West Ham’s Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen ultimately sealed the victory for the Hammers, marking their first league win at Old Trafford in 18 years – the last occasion being Carlos Tevez’s decisive goal that ensured their survival on the final day of the 2006/07 season.

West Ham were tested both before taking the lead and particularly after their second goal, with Amad Diallo a source of danger throughout. The Ivorian even appealed for a penalty moments before West Ham went 2-0 in front, while a number of opportunities and half chances fell to Rasmus Hojlund that the Dane, who did score in Europe on Thursday, couldn’t capitalise on.

Amorim, who watched his team dismantle Athletic Club 7-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals of the Europa League, next takes his side to Champions League-chasing Chelsea before rounding off their season at home to Aston Villa – another side vying to get back into European football’s top tier competition.
