President Trump to push budget bill on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President Donald Trump is embarking on an uncommon visit to Capitol Hill to press House Republicans to support his wide-ranging legislative plan, a proposal that’s already causing splits within his party.

On Tuesday morning, President Trump will be on Capitol Hill to directly appeal to House Republicans to approve his notable legislation. It’s not only Democrats who are resisting the bill, but some Republicans are also cautious.

“If we do get it, we’re going to have the largest tax decrease in history,” said Trump.

The sweeping legislation advances key parts of Trump’s platform.

“If we don’t get it, that means the Democrats will have stopped us,” said Trump.

The proposal features tax reductions but entails significant cuts, reducing finances for Medicaid, food assistance, and green energy programs, while boosting funding for border security.

“This is arguably the largest and most comprehensive piece of legislation that Congress has worked on in probably generations,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).

Democrats call Trump’s visit a political stunt, accusing him of strong-arming Republicans into voting “yes.”

“The reason why President Trump is coming up to the Hill is to try to remind Republicans that they don’t work for the American people. They work for him and Elon Musk,” said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.).

Speaker Johnson says the House is on track to pass the bill by their Memorial Day deadline.
