CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCA) — The U of I board of trustees is discussing the possibility of purchasing a Wi-Fi system for Memorial Stadium.

The $10 million initiative aims to enhance the fan experience by providing internet access throughout the venue and the tailgating area in Grange Grove. Additionally, the system will bolster stadium operations, encompassing tickets, concessions, and security.

Veronica Kucharczyk, a 2025 graduate, mentioned that currently, it’s almost impossible to make calls or send texts from the tailgating area. According to her, implementing Wi-Fi would be transformative for her and many others.

“As a member of Polish Club, we host a few tailgates, especially during Dad’s Weekend,” Kucharczyk shared. “If parents arrive late, it’s tough for them to locate us since they’re unfamiliar with the campus. Telling them ‘Oh, we’re in this corner’ isn’t helpful. Extending Wi-Fi would be extremely beneficial.”

The board will be talking about the proposal Thursday. It’s one of nine purchase recommendations on their agenda.
