DENVER (KDVR) – Police officers in Colorado were called to a neighborhood in Durango to handle an unusual situation involving a kangaroo known for escaping — again.

The Durango Police Department said this week that officers had another run-in with Irwin, the viral kangaroo that escaped in Durango in October 2024.

This kangaroo, named Irwin, first gained notoriety a few months back when Durango police had to chase him down and “arrest” him after a speedy getaway. Despite being returned to his owner at that time, Irwin found a way to escape once more, living up to his reputation.

On Monday, officers were tasked again with corralling the elusive marsupial. The police department shared body camera footage showing the officers as they cornered Irwin, lifted him up, and safely placed him in the back of a police vehicle.

“We have the kangaroo detained,” one officer reported in the video.

The department dubbed Irwin “Durango’s most unexpected repeat offender,” but officers captured the kangaroo and “proved public safety doesn’t skip a hop — even with paws and a pouch.”

While residents of Durango are banned from owning several pets, including monkeys, tigers and bears, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said it’s legal to have a pet red kangaroo, depending on local laws and state and federal compliance.
