According to Georgia law, it’s a felony offense to have sexual contact with a student, regardless of age or consent.

CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities in Camden County have arrested a Georgia teacher, charging him with inappropriate conduct involving a student, as revealed by the Camden County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office issued a statement detailing that Andrew Medders, a teacher within the Camden County School System, was arrested on Tuesday over allegations of misconduct with a student.

In addition to his teaching role, Medders was employed part-time with Camden County Emergency Management. The Camden County Board of Commissioners announced that by Tuesday evening, he had been dismissed from both positions.

The sheriff’s office said the Kingsland Police Department received a tip Monday involving Medders, who referred the case to the St. Marys Police Department. the Camden County Sheriff’s Office then took over.

While the sheriff’s office did not provide details on the case pending an active investigation, they referenced Georgia law stating it’s a felony offense for anyone in positions of authority to have sexual contact with students, regardless of age or consent.

“We are taking this matter extremely seriously,” said Sheriff Kevin Chaney. “Our priority is always the safety and trust of our students, staff, and the greater community, and my office is committed to conducting a thorough and impartial investigation while working closely with our law enforcement partners, the Camden County School System, and the Camden County Board of Commissioners. We will continue to uphold the trust placed in us by this community.”

Camden County Administrator Shawn Boatright released a statement Tuesday night on the arrest.

“We are aware of the arrest and are treating this situation with the seriousness it warrants,” said County Administrator Shawn M. Boatright. “We are fully cooperating with law enforcement and supporting the investigative process. The safety and well-being of our community remain our top priorities.”

The case remains actively under investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.
