House committee starts deliberations on 'big, beautiful bill'

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – In an unusual early morning meeting, the House Rules committee embarked on detailed discussions over the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, an extensive legislative proposal supported by President Donald Trump.

In a rarely seen move, lawmakers convened before dawn to advance what could potentially be one of the year’s most impactful pieces of legislation, occurring shortly after a personal visit from the president.

Overnight the House Rules committee gaveled in to begin work on the Republicans’ massive budget bill, the last stop before a full House vote.

“This isn’t transparent to hold hearings at 3 a.m. on a bill of this size and this scope and this scale,” said Rep. Joe Neguse (D-Colo.).

President Trump’s uncommon Capitol Hill appearance came just hours prior, as he encouraged House Republicans to support the bill he refers to as the “big, beautiful bill”.

“Anybody that didn’t support it as a republican I would consider to be a fool. It’s a great bill,” said Trump.

The sweeping package combines tax reforms, billions in border security funding, and deep cuts to programs like Medicaid and food assistance.

“We are going to land this plane and deliver this,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).

Democrats say they are united in their opposition.

“We’re not going to stand for it. We’re going to fight this bill in committee. We’re going to fight this bill on the floor,” said Rep. Alma Adams (D-N.C.).

The House still plans to vote on the bill later this week.
