JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Johnson City crews are working to add a pop of color and increase wildlife near West Walnut Street.

The project is one of the final steps in the years-long West Walnut renovation process.

City Forester Pat Walding in Johnson City announced plans to plant about 3,000 shrubs along with 15 trees to give residents a chance to enjoy the outdoors.

“Essentially, everything requires minimal upkeep and will mature to a height of around three feet at most,” Walding explained. “We’re optimistic about quick growth. Fortunately, we didn’t lose any plants over the winter, which is a positive outcome.”

The brightly colored flowers and foliage will hopefully attract more bees and hummingbirds to the region, Walding said.

“Some of the shrubs are pollinators that attract bees and hummingbirds,” Walding mentioned. “Notably, across from the post office on the street’s closed section, there’s a variety of plants, including aromatic ones that release scents you can enjoy as you walk by.”
