URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — A 25-year-old Urbana man has been arrested after threatening someone with a firearm in a road rage incident.
On Saturday, May 24, Urbana Police officers were alerted to an incident involving an armed individual on N Cunningham Ave. as a result of a road rage scenario. The victim reported that the offender had brandished a gun.
During their investigation, the Urbana Police Department collaborated with the University of Illinois Police Department to make use of their automated license plate reader (ALPR) system. This tool enabled the Urbana Police to swiftly pinpoint a vehicle associated with the occurrence.
Details obtained from the ALPR system were distributed to nearby law enforcement agencies, which helped the Rantoul Police Department in locating the vehicle on the 200 block of W Frost Street. Urbana officers then joined Rantoul officers at the scene, where they identified the driver as a 25-year-old male from Urbana.
Further investigation led Urbana detectives to obtain a search warrant, which then led to the recovery of a firearm. The offender was arrested for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault.
