Rock guitarist dead at 77

ORMAND BEACH, FL. () — Rick Derringer, renowned for his lead vocals on the 60s hit “Hang On, Sloopy” and the 70s favorite “Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo,” has passed away.

Derringer was a gifted singer and musician, as well as a session artist collaborating with renowned names like Barbra Streisand and Steely Dan. His talents extended to music production, where he played a key role in The Edgar Winter Group’s 1972 hit “Frankenstein” and helped produce Weird Al Yankovic’s debut album. Derringer was known for supporting emerging artists, such as Patti Smith, whom he featured on “Jump” from his first album “All-American Boy” in 1973.

He also toured alongside Cyndi Lauper, contributing to three of her albums. More recently, Derringer performed with Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band, Peter Frampton, and various other artists.

Derringer died Monday. No cause of death has been announced. He was 77.
