CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – Illinois women’s gymnastics promoted from within for its women’s gymnastics head coach opening.

Following the departure of former head coach Nadalie Walsh, the Illini decided to elevate Josh Nilson to the head coach position. Nilson had served as the associate head coach for Illinois during the 2023-24 and 2025-26 seasons.

He does have head coaching experience. Nilson led the Temple women’s gymnastics program for five years, helping the Owls to three conference titles.

He hopes to instill a sense of pride in his athletes and fellow coaches.

“We need to instill a sense of pride in Illinois,” Nilson expressed to WCIA. “That’s been lacking. While people are fond of the school, historically, the gymnastics program hasn’t fully embraced the pride associated with the ‘Block I.’ Understanding our identity is crucial. The program, though rich in history, has faced difficulties, and recognizing our roots is the first step.”

He hopes to have everyone on the same page, with that goal in mind, within his team.

“Clarity in vision is key… Everyone on my team and staff must know their roles,” he continued. “That understanding brings success. We’re like a penny stock; you should keep an eye on us because we have strong support from the administration and the university. I’ve never seen a team more eager to move forward.”

Nilson signed a five-year contract.
