DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Danville voted Tuesday night on an ordinance that would establish regulations for camping in town.

During the Public Services Committee meeting, the committee voted to recommend the camping regulations to the full city council.

If approved by the city council during the upcoming meeting, public camping will officially be categorized as a “nuisance” in the city. This would mean individuals are banned from sleeping on public sidewalks, streets, alleys, lanes, other public right-of-ways, parks, benches, or any property belonging to the city.

The decision follows recent events where several residents of Ellsworth Park were required to gather their belongings and relocate. According to WCIA, the police have reported receiving complaints concerning litter, used needles, and other hazardous materials in the vicinity. However, park residents expressed to WCIA that they have limited alternatives.

Individuals who breach this ordinance will face a $75 fine for their first offense. The penalty will increase with each subsequent violation, leading up to the sixth offense. If someone violates this ordinance six times within a two-year span, they may face imprisonment, based on city records.

Danville said the fee could also be paid if the person in violation cleans “the rights-of-way and other public facilities.” Danville also said there is an avenue to reduce the penalty. The person in violation must removes all personal property from their campsite, after they are informed that they were in violation of the ordinance.

The ordinance was recommended to be passed 6-1 Tuesday night. Members Ludwig, Jones, Ahrens, Cooper, Pickering and Strebing voted in favor of the ordinance, while member Teague voted against it.

If camping in the city becomes off limits, several organizations in Danville provide resources like food, shelter and more for those in need.

Chief Executive Officer of the Danville YMCA Laura Floyd said the YMCA provides some food, clothing items, and a space to shower.

The Dwelling Place of Vermilion County, located in the basement of First Presbyterian Church, 100 N Franklin, Danville, also provides resources for those in need.

The Day Center is open Mondays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. where they provide lunch, showers, laundry facilities, computers, recourses, and clothing. They also hold a Hygiene Pantry every 30 days. The Dwelling has two houses for homeless families as well. If you are interested in volunteering with The Dwelling, email tdpdaycenter@gmail.com or call 217-213-5308.

The Danville Rescue Mission and Vermilion Community Restoration also provide resources for community members in need.
