VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – The Volusia Sheriff’s Office declared on Thursday that its detectives had arrested an individual in connection with a shooting that left a 16-year-old boy injured near DeLand during the weekend.

Travis Fowler, 25, is being charged with attempted murder, providing false information to law enforcement, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, as reported by the sheriff’s office.

Around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, a driver passing through the 1700 block of North Woodland Boulevard reported hearing gunshots, and noted that the rear window of his vehicle had shattered, according to the agency’s initial statement on social media.

A 16-year-old boy riding as a passenger toward the rear of the vehicle soon noticed that a bullet had grazed his head, investigators said. The teen — who was riding home from a graduation party with his family when he was injured — was continuing to recover at the time of this report, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office in a prior update announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the shooting, adding the teen was being evaluated for potential complications from his injuries.

Thursday’s update states detectives managed to track down Fowler with video surveillance footage, as well as a “gas station transaction” and other means. Investigators said that the bullet went through the vehicle after Fowler allegedly fired it at another person during an altercation.

Video cameras in the area of the shooting outside 1757 N. Woodland Blvd. showed Fowler firing at another subject after an altercation. The bullet traveled into a passing vehicle, striking a 16-year-old passenger in the head as he rode home from a graduation party with his family.

After finding video of the shooting, detectives backtracked and found additional video of Fowler and two others at a nearby gas station. The group could be heard arguing over money. Fowler used his EBT card to pay for items, which helped detectives confirm his identity.

Fowler — who deputies said lives in an apartment complex at the scene and has a suspended driver’s license — was arrested on Wednesday after being spotted leaving his apartment complex while driving a car with an incorrect tag, the post states.

He reportedly told detectives that he was in Orlando on the night of the shooting, the sheriff’s office said, adding investigators then showed Fowler the video footage allegedly placing him at a nearby gas station just before the shooting occurred.

Fowler is being held on no bond at the Volusia County Branch Jail, according to the post.
