The Beatles concert that helped usher in a sports-rock connection

INDIANAPOLIS — It’s quite a sight to behold, truly. A permanent fixture at the Indiana Farmer’s Coliseum, located around five miles north of the city center, it resembles an old album cover from The Beatles’ 1967 release “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” when viewed from afar.

Walk closer and you see it’s something else.

This familiar image from the iconic vinyl album is, in fact, an artistic creation by Corey Heimann. It comprises 2,368 meticulously arranged Rubik’s Cubes to form the vibrant mosaic. Heimann crafted this piece last September as a tribute to the 60th anniversary of September 3, 1964, marking the date The Beatles held their only two concerts in Indianapolis at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

On that day, a crowd of 29,337 attended both performances. Although The Beatles found the audience to be “relatively quiet,” George Harrison fondly remembered an interesting event in the city as they traveled to the airport.
