Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff is on the brink of losing his position as the state opposition has introduced a no-confidence motion, which is anticipated to be approved by the parliament.

Labor leader Dean Winter presented the motion yesterday and proceeded to advance it this morning. He pointed to issues such as Rockliff’s budget management, the mishandled deployment of the Spirit of Tasmania vessels, and the possibility of privatization as grounds to remove the premier.

“The direction that the Tasmanian premier is taking our state will send it broke,” he said.

The Greens attempted to amend the no-confidence motion to make explicit reference to the stadium as a reason for poor budget management.

“They’re implementing a flawed process of legislation to hastily push through an approval for a stadium,” stated Tasmanian Greens leader Rosalie Woodruff.

“Such an abuse of legislative processes that has never been seen in the history of Tasmania.”

That amendment was voted down due to Labor’s support for the team, however the club voiced concerns this morning that the no-confidence motion and a fresh election would spell the end for the team.

Tasmanian parliament has been debating the motion today, and a vote on it is expected tonight.
