Aaron Ramsdale is set for salvation after a season from hell by holding talks over a move to West Ham, talkSPORT understands.

The former Arsenal No.1 only joined Southampton from the Gunners last season but is looking for an instant return to the Premier League.

At 27, he allowed 66 of the Saints’ 86 goals during their near-record relegation season, where they only managed to gather 12 points, just one more than the all-time low held by Derby.

Despite this, West Ham manager Graham Potter still values Ramsdale’s experience in the top flight with Arsenal, Sheffield United, and Bournemouth.

The Hammers are seeking a new goalkeeper following Lukasz Fabianski’s departure after seven seasons of service.

Ramsdale won’t come cheap, though, with Southampton hoping for £20million in exchange for a player they paid £18m for just under a year ago.

However, the south coast team are looking to offload his hefty £100,000 per-week wages as they gear up for their Championship return.

At the London Stadium, Ramsdale would contend with Alphonse Areola for the goalkeeper position, though the Frenchman did not fare significantly better than Ramsdale last season.

West Ham finished 14th in the Premier League and conceded 62 goals, the sixth most in the division.

For Ramsdale, the move back to London could be the perfect chance to rebuild his career which was thriving just two years ago.

The Stoke-born talent shone for Sheffield United in the top flight and was bought by Arsenal for £30m in 2021 – a club record for a goalkeeper.

He was Mikel Arteta’s first choice for the 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns and a regular in England squads, making five appearances overall.

However, the arrival of David Raya in 2023 complicated matters.

Arteta continued to claim that he had two No.1 goalkeepers, but it quickly became clear that wasn’t the case as Ramsdale made just 11 appearances to Raya’s 41 during their only season together.

Speaking after his move to Southampton in the summer of 2024, Ramsdale told talkSPORT: “I’ve been around football long enough that the manager’s decision is the manager’s decision.

“I tried my best to change his mind and force my way back in. His mind was set and at the same time David had a great season.

“You can have all the upset or qualms about being taken out but when someone else is delivering, you’ve just got to take it on the chin.

“It was tough but I’ve found a new home and I’m looking forward to playing again. You move on, there’s no bad blood and you’ve got to restart your career again.

I’ve faced Salah, Kane and Haaland but here’s why Vardy is my toughest opponent

“It was a really difficult season but my character and personality, I started the game by enjoying it but when it gets taken away, it’s tough.

“That’s why unfortunately you have to move on but I’m happy about where I’m at now.”

Arsenal too are looking to sign a new goalkeeper as a back-up to Raya.

The Premier League runners-up will be losing second choice Neto back to Bournemouth at the end of his season loan.

They have registered an interest in Espanyol’s Joan Garcia, but so have many other sides, including Barcelona where he looks set to end up.
