TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA)— The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office holds a news conference about a Florida law that is going into effect on July 1, 2025.

Under the new law, juveniles who distribute narcotics that cause a fatal overdose could now be prosecuted for murder, HCSO said.

This update is a direct response to the deaths caused by individuals unknowingly consuming narcotics that are laced with deadly substances.

According to HCSO, the new legislation emerged following the death of Devin Ramos, 17, who passed away after unknowingly consuming a fentanyl-laced pill provided by a juvenile who couldn’t be held accountable at that time.

Sheriff Chad Chronister is joined by Devin’s mother, Amy Olmdea, and State Attorney Suzy Lopez.

They will speak about the development and importance of Senate Bill 612.

Florida Representative Traci Foster and Senator Danny Burgess shared the following statements:

“The tragic loss of a young individual in our community due to fentanyl poisoning serves as a stark reminder of the lethal outcomes associated with illegal drug trafficking. After this incident, Sheriff Chad Chronister took a crucial step by bringing this pressing issue to the legislative forefront, advocating for decisive action to ensure those involved in this dangerous trade face the due consequences. Senate Bill 612 is the result of that advocacy, amending state law to ensure that those who unlawfully supply controlled substances such as fentanyl are accountable when these drugs lead to fatalities. This law aims to save lives and render justice. My gratitude goes to Sheriff Chronister for his leadership, alongside the law enforcement professionals who combat this crisis daily and safeguard our communities.” -Senator Danny Burgess

“Fentanyl is wreaking havoc on families and dismantling communities throughout our nation. Those involved in distributing this harmful substance bear the responsibility of its consequences and should be viewed accordingly by the law. Supporting the courageous men and women combating this issue on the ground, Florida is now in a position to hold fentanyl distributors to greater accountability. I express my gratitude to Sheriff Chronister and Florida’s law enforcement for their unwavering commitment to the state’s safety and their determination to hold these drug dealers responsible for their deadly deeds.”

-Representative Traci Koster
