S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles warns residents of ticket text scam

SOUTH CAROLINA (WSPA) – The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles is warning residents of a scam text message.

Numerous individuals have reported receiving a suspicious text message that pretends to be from the SCDMV, issuing a “final notice” regarding unpaid traffic violations.

This message also warns residents of potential consequences such as the suspension of vehicle registration, loss of driving privileges, legal prosecution, a negative impact on credit scores, and an additional 35% service fee.

The SCDMV said that they will never message drivers to collect payments of any kind.

“The SCDMV does not send texts to customers for collecting payments related to unpaid tickets or toll violations,” stated Mike Fitts from the SCDMV. “For any transactions, customers should ensure they are using the official agency website at SCDMVonline.com and not a deceptive site with a similar address.”

If you or someone you know has received one of these messages, the best thing to do is to block the sender and delete the message. Do not click the link or respond to the message.
