The Trump administration petitioned the Supreme Court on Friday to permit it to continue its efforts to dismantle the Education Department after a lower court judge had put a halt to these actions.
Trump campaigned on abolishing the department, and his administration since taking office has looked to gut its workforce and operations.
Last month, U.S. District Court Judge Myong Joun issued an order preventing these efforts, mandating the administration to reinstate nearly 1,400 employees who had been laid off and to take other steps to counteract the president’s orders.
Solicitor General D. John Sauer mentioned in the recent application that, “Every day this preliminary injunction is in place, it imposes judicial oversight over the Executive Branch’s routine operations.”
It marks the Trump administration’s 19th emergency plea to the Supreme Court since taking office.
