Captain America himself just proved he’s a real-life romantic hero.
Chris Evans has shared heartwarming new details about his proposal to his wife, Alba Baptista, and it turns out he did it in her native language. While attending the New York City premiere of his latest film, Materialists, on Saturday (June 7), the Marvel alum spoke to The Knot about the memorable moment he asked the Portuguese actress to be his wife.
“I proposed to my wife in Portuguese, she’s Portuguese, so I learned how to say ‘Will you marry me?’ in Portuguese,” Evans revealed. “I practiced so much because I was [nervous]. I rehearsed it all week! I practiced it so much that while making breakfast together, I almost started saying it unconsciously, like, ‘Oh god! That’s not just a song that’s stuck in my head. It’s going to give the surprise away.’”
Despite his thorough preparation, the actor confessed that the significant moment didn’t go perfectly. “I got really nervous when it was time to propose, and I think I might have messed it up, but I still remember it!” he noted.
Evans, 43, and Baptista, 26, were quietly engaged before tying the knot in September 2023. The couple exchanged vows during a private ceremony at Evansâ home outside of Boston, followed by a second celebration in Baptistaâs home country of Portugal. The pair have kept their relationship mostly under wraps, making only a handful of public appearances since first being linked in 2022.
The actor is currently promoting Materialists, a romantic dramedy from Past Lives director Celine Song. The film â which also stars Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal â follows a high-society matchmaker navigating love, money, and morality in modern-day Manhattan. It marks a return to more grounded, character-driven work for Evans, who became a household name as Steve Rogers in Marvelâs Captain America and Avengers franchises.
In addition to his decade-long run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Evans has starred in a wide range of films, including Knives Out, Snowpiercer, Gifted, The Gray Man, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. More recently, he appeared opposite Ana de Armas in the action rom-com Ghosted for Apple TV+.
Now, with Materialists set to hit U.S. theaters on June 13, fans will see a different side of Evans â and judging by the red carpet buzz, heâs happy to be back in the spotlight with his real-life leading lady by his side.
