This year, Apple’s iPad is receiving a significant update: the company has just revealed the latest version of iPadOS, its operating system for tablets, during WWDC. (Apple published its press releases prior to them being officially announced in the virtual event.) The standout feature is a new windowing system for enhancing multitasking across applications, coupled with a new Files app, expanded Apple Intelligence features, and a Mac-like Preview app designed for viewing and editing PDFs.

As is typical, the latest iPadOS shares numerous elements with the new iOS, such as the Vision Pro-inspired visual style known as “Liquid Glass.” The updated naming convention also aligns with Apple’s broader strategy, transitioning from version numbers to years. The iPad differs in its method of handling multitasking, transitioning between apps, and navigating the system. With iPadOS 26, this distinction is more pronounced than ever: Apple declares it will allow users to “fluidly resize app windows” and position windows wherever you wish on the screen. The windowing system can also function within Stage Manager and operates across multiple displays. Stage Manager has traditionally been a complex aspect of iPad software, but this appears to be a robust step forward towards achieving true multitasking.
