JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — A Johnson City man has been charged with attempted rape and indecent exposure after two incidents in downtown.

The Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) announced in a news release that Daniel Whitaker, age 48, has been taken into custody following a continued investigation which commenced on May 11.

A report accessed by News Channel 11 indicated that Whitaker allegedly exposed himself to three individuals inside a vehicle on Cherry Street in the downtown area shortly after midnight on May 11.

After Whitaker left the area, the three victims went to a business downtown.

That same evening, a suspect, identified as Whitaker, reportedly seized one of the victims, dragged them into some bushes, and tried to take off their clothing.

The victim then punched Whitaker in the face and escaped, according to the affidavit.

The JCPD stated that Whitaker was charged with one count of attempted rape and three counts of indecent exposure.

Whitaker surrendered to law enforcement at the Washington County Detention Center. He was arraigned on Monday.

During the arraignment, the prosecution told the judge Whitaker had previous incidents including criminal trespass and a different indecent exposure charge. The prosecution also said Whitaker had failed to appear in court five different times.

Whitaker denied those claims.

The judge determined Whitaker was a danger to the community and set bond at $150,000.

The judge said his hearing will take place June 18.
