Two “passing motorists” assisted a police officer in rescuing an elderly woman trapped inside a burning car after an accident in Chester, New York, approximately an hour from New York City.

Chester police were dispatched to the scene of a rollover crash on Kings Highway around 4 a.m. Sunday.

“As they were en route, updates indicated that the driver was trapped in the vehicle, which was on fire,” the police stated in a Facebook post on Monday. “Officer Nicholas Contino was the first law enforcement official to arrive at the scene. He handed his fire extinguisher to a passing motorist and worked to find the driver in the vehicle.”

In video footage shared on Facebook of the police response, one of the Good Samaritan motorists is seen swiftly extinguishing flames with the fire extinguisher.

“Officer Contino’s effort greatly increased the motorist’s chances for survival, and he is commended for a job well done!” police wrote.
