Historic Mitchelville celebrates Juneteenth

MITCHELVILLE, S.C. () — Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park has many events planned for Juneteenth week.

Starting on Thursday, June 12, explore the variety of bird species found at Freedom Park during the Naycha and B’uhds event. Hosted by the Hilton Head Audubon, this hands-on presentation delves into the significant relationship between the natural world and the Gullah Geechee culture’s appreciation of wildlife and wisdom. The event is complimentary and kicks off at 11 a.m.

That same night, you can experience Freedom Park under the stars. Sleepover at the Park starts at 6 p.m. and the cost is $20 per person.

On Friday, June 13, it’s Children’s Day, where festivities begin at 11 a.m., and participation is open to all at no charge. Later on the same day, join a traditional Drum Circle at 5:30 p.m., which is also free for everyone to enjoy.

The Annual Juneteenth Celebration is Saturday, June 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $10 per person. R&B artist Leela James will perform.

On Thursday, June 14, get your running shoes ready. It’s the Annual Juneteenth 5k. The race starts at 9 a.m. Click here to register.
