Georgia state officials warn demonstrators ahead planned protests

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The Georgia Attorney General issued a stern warning to anyone planning to protest this weekend on Wednesday.

“It’s very simple,” Attorney General Chris Carr said in part. “Protesters use words. Rioters use violence. There is no gray area.”

Carr mentioned that the statement served as “a warning to rioters.” On Saturday, at least 20 demonstrations are scheduled as part of “No Kings” events across the Peach State.

“In Georgia, participating in violence with the intent to alter public policy can result in a Domestic Terrorism charge,” he stated. “The penalty for Domestic Terrorism ranges from 5 to 35 years in prison.”

Governor Brian Kemp also released a statement on X.

“My office is in constant communication with state and local law enforcement and is prepared to take any necessary actions to protect our communities from crime and violence while honoring the constitutional right to peaceful assembly,” Kemp stated. “I remain steadfast in my support for public safety officers and the rule of law, and any violence against those who protect and serve will face swift and severe accountability.”

Carr also said that the bottom line is that they will defend the right to peacefully protest, but the state will bring charges against “those who earn it.”
