Copeland’s was closed Wednesday after a shooting took place outside. JSO says the man was shot in the chest and died of his injuries.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting incident that occurred near Copeland’s restaurant on Southside Boulevard on Wednesday. According to JSO, a man sustained a gunshot wound to the chest in the parking lot around 2 p.m.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department transported the man to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

JSO reported that the man was present to “meet someone,” though the reason for the meeting remains unclear to investigators. Several individuals were taken into custody on Wednesday night, but the police have not yet identified their involvement in the shooting.

Three people are detained as suspects, JSO said, and two witnesses are speaking with police about what they saw.

A black four-door car, possibly a Nissan, was observed leaving the parking lot and heading south on Southside Boulevard following the shooting, JSO stated. Authorities are investigating whether the vehicle was involved and are urging the public to provide any information they may have about the car.

If you know anything, call 904-630-0500. You can also email JSOCrimetips@jaxsheriff.org or call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.

Police believe the incident was isolated and related to the person the victim was meeting with.

The entire perimeter of Copeland’s was taped off Wednesday. The restaurant told First Coast News it would be closed for the rest of the day.
