Police probe whether 'decade-long feud' led to torched cars

Police are investigating whether a decade-long feud may be the reason behind a second firebomb attack on a Sydney home.

Neighbours on Burnell Street in Russell Lea were woken by explosions about 2.30am as two cars went up in flames.

The vehicles parked in the driveway of a family home were quickly engulfed in flames.

One of the residents was captured running around the inferno and into a neighbour’s garage before jumping the fence.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, with the fire already beginning to spread to the garage doors and two more cars parked on the street.

It took half an hour to contain the flames.

After the fires were extinguished, the messages left on two of the vehicles became clearer: “100% gronks”.

More than 11 people were inside the home at the time, including a two-week-old baby.

Two people were filmed on CCTV setting the vehicles alight before running away.

It’s not the first time this has happened to the same home.

In 2013, two men were filmed torching parked cars out the front of the house. They have never been caught.

9News understands the family has lived here since 2002, and that the address is linked to an entertainment business associated with a nightclub and record label.

“They are a well-connected, community family,” NSW Police Superintendent Christine McDonald said.

“In relation to any known police links, we’re still working through that.

“A decade-long feud is one that we will look into. I mean, it’s a hell of a long time to hold a grudge.”

Detectives are now investigating why this home was targeted for a second time and whether the arsonists behind last night’s attack are linked to the incident 12 years ago.
