COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) – Riverbanks Zoo and Garden announced Thursday the death of its Giant Pacific Octopus named Susan.

The zoo reported that its veterinary and animal teams collaborated over the past year as Susan, the octopus, experienced aging, referred to as “senescence,” a natural phase indicating the end of this species’ life cycle.

Susan’s quality of life was monitored every day throughout the process.

“The aquarists, who were very familiar with Susan, diligently observed her quality of life on a daily basis. With great care and kindness, always prioritizing Susan’s welfare, the teams decided to assist her in a peaceful transition,” the zoo stated in their announcement.

Susan was named after Susan F. Boyd, who contributed to Riverbanks Zoo and Garden’s conservation efforts through The Boyd Foundation.

Susan lived in the Darnall W. and Susan F. Boyd Aquarium & Reptile Conservation Center, where she contributed to helping biologists and aquarists gain a better understanding of her extraordinary species and the significance of marine conservation.

Zoo leaders said a new octopus is acclimating behind the scenes and will join the exhibit in the coming weeks.
