Married At First Sight star Teejay Halkias has lifted the lid on the financial burdens he incurred from appearing on the popular reality TV series.
The 29-year-old groom has revealed he spent thousands of dollars over two months of filming, shedding light on the hidden costs rarely discussed.
‘It’s expensive being on the show. I think I spent close to 10 grand of my own money,’ Teejay told the On It Off It podcast.
He then warned that those thinking of applying for the show should ensure they are financially secure before doing so.
‘If you’re not in a position to go on financially, you can get in a hole,’ he said.

Teejay said he was paid $150 a day for his stint on the Channel Nine dating experiment, which he claimed did not begin to cover his expenses.
‘They pay for lunch, Monday to Friday, but you’ve got to buy your breakfast and dinner, make all your food, your groceries,’ he said.
‘For commitment ceremonies and dinner events, you’ll need two new outfits weekly, none of which are covered by the show. Additionally, off-camera dating involves expenses for outings that aren’t reimbursed either.’
He added he was unaware how expensive the MAFS experience would be when he first signed up.
Last month, Teejay revealed he made a move to reconnect with his TV wife Beth Kelly after their dramatic breakup.
The groom made the shock admission he felt compelled to check in on Beth, 28, once filming was over.
‘I tried to reach out and make sure she was doing okay. I know she was pretty upset during the show,’ he told 9Entertainment.
‘She wanted to chat about a few things, so we had a chat and that was that. We had a long conversation, it was good.’

While the reunion wasn’t romantic, Teejay said their relationship is now on friendly terms.
‘Things are obviously platonic between Beth and I. It won’t be anything romantic… but amicable,’ he said.
‘If we see each other out we’ll speak to each other and whatnot, but I wouldn’t say we’re best friends.’
It comes after Beth Kelly dramatically ended her relationship with Teejay just days before the couple were due to face one another at Final Vows.
In March, a hair salon manager from the Gold Coast made the tough choice to leave the experiment following weeks of feeling rejected by her TV spouse.
Beth blindsided viewers and Teejay alike by calling it quits as the pair packed up their belongings at the eleventh hour, following an emotional fallout at the final dinner party.
Breaking down in tears, Beth confessed: ‘That conversation [at the Dinner Party] has made me feel so s**t.
‘It’s obvious he doesn’t want me, doesn’t want this relationship, and I can’t go to Final Vows and stand in front of someone that I’ve had feelings for, confess that I wanted a future with them, for them to tell me that again.’
Visibly upset, she added: ‘I don’t see a future with you. I’m not gonna put my energy into it. I’m not wasting my time anymore. Oh God, I’m so sick of crying’.
