Massive Accident Closes I-20 in Aiken County; Nearby Bridge Collapses

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WJBF) — An early morning crash involving a fuel truck shut down a major stretch of I-20 eastbound in Aiken County Saturday.

Officials reported that the call about the incident was received shortly before 4 a.m. Emergency responders arrived at the location near mile marker 13 to address a fire involving a large truck. Various agencies, including the police and fire department, were engaged in efforts to control the flames.

Two people were sent to the hospital.

As of now, I-20 is completely shut down between Exit 11 and Exit 18. A bridge on Old Vaucluse Road also collapsed. That road is also closed.

Officials say this will be a prolonged closure. Drivers are urged to avoid the area and find alternate routes.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation has announced that vehicles heading east on I-20 are being rerouted at Exit 11 and can get back on at Exit 18. For westbound vehicles, the detour is the reverse: they exit at Exit 18 and rejoin the highway at Exit 11.

We’ll update this story as new information comes in.
