A Sydney aged care community is mourning the loss of a resident who was on his daily afternoon walk when he was killed in a hit-and-run.

Employees at Whiddon Easton Park were some of the first to assist Boris Marusic, and the head of the facility is now urging the driver involved to step up.

The 70-year-old was on his daily walk around Glenfield, south of Liverpool, yesterday afternoon.

He was crossing Canterbury Road just after 4pm when police say he was struck by a ute.

“It took place near the end of the workday for many staff who were leaving and saw the incident,” stated Chris Mamarelis, the CEO of Whiddon Aged Care.

Staff and neighbours rushed to his aid and called triple zero.

“Paramedics and police were there to help the old man who was lying on the street,” witness Surez Mainali said.

“They were giving him first aid treatment on the road.”

Marusic was taken to Liverpool Hospital under police escort but he later died.

Police say a silver dual-cab ute failed to stop after striking Marusic.

The ute was last seen continuing north on Canterbury Avenue.

“The carnage and the tragedy they’ve left behind them, I just urge them to come forward,” Mamarelis said.

Marusic lived at the facility for the past four years and had become an integral part of its community.

His death left members of the aged care facility shattered.

Staff told 9News he loved feeding the birds and would often pick up a lottery ticket from the local newsagent on his daily walks.

“He was a beloved resident, a part of our community, involved in a lot of activities,” Mamarelis said.

“He was known and part of the fabric of what we do here. He is sorely going to be missed.”
