Abria Smith Achieves Second Place at National Championships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Senior thrower Abria Smith made history for the Illinois Illini by becoming the school’s highest-ranking finisher in the women’s shot put, securing a silver medal at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Her throw of 61 feet, 10 1/4 inches put her behind only Colorado State’s Mya Lesner, daughter of professional wrestler Brock Lesnar.

Smith was a top contributor to the Illini’s fifth-place finish in the women’s team standings, which was their highest placing in 29 years.

“The experience was incredible,” Smith expressed. “The energy, the spectators, the competitors, it was all amazing.” She added, “All glory to God, and I am deeply thankful for the chance to be here under the guidance of Coach Lambert and Coach Deanna.”

Smith is set to participate in several events this summer, including competitions in Germany and Oregon, aiming to qualify for the World Championships in September and ultimately, striving to compete in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
