Police have given an update on the manhunt for a man accused of throwing hot coffee at a baby in Brisbane last year.

Queensland Police Service Acting Commissioner Shane Chelepy told 4BC’s Peter Fegan that the investigation was “absolutely” ongoing.

The nine-month-old underwent four surgeries for burns to his face, arms and legs following the attack.

“This was a horrible incident that happened almost a year ago, it struck our investigators pretty hard,” Chelepy said.

“I commend the investigators for their continued hard work on this case. This matter is not being sidelined; it is a grave offense, and they are diligently pursuing it.”

“What I can say is we’re still working with our international partners to progress this matter, and to get a resolution here.”

Chelepy said he was limited in what he could reveal.

A baby boy is in hospital recovering from a horrific burns after a stranger poured hot coffee over his head in a Brisbane park. The infant, who cannot be identified under Queensland law as a child victim of crime, has suffered burns to his face and chest. The nine-month old and his mother were ambushed as they were enjoying a picnic at Hanlon Park in Stones Corner at about midday yesterday.

“There are a range of investigative strategies under way, and we’re going to keep these strategies at play,” he said.

Asked if there was still an operation under way, Chelepy said “absolutely”.

Chelepy avoided answering whether detectives were currently, or had recently been, in China.

“I don’t want to compromise their investigative strategy,” he said.

The name of the suspect, who fled the country, has since been revealed in a Chinese media outlet.

Queensland police have refrained from releasing further details on the suspect’s identity as the international manhunt continues.
