Officers under investigation in Charles Faggart's death reassigned

Charles Faggart’s mother demands accountability after officers involved in his death at Duval County Jail are reassigned.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It’s been more than two months since Charles Faggart died following an incident inside the Duval County Jail.

Friday afternoon, his mother says she’s still in the dark and feels blindsided after learning the officers involved have been quietly reassigned.

She’s now demanding answers and accountability, as she took her fight to the steps of the Duval County Courthouse.

On Friday afternoon, Tracey Karpas was at the corner of the Duval County Courthouse, calling for justice for her son Charles, who passed away two months prior.

“My son cannot speak for himself, and I’m going to keep fighting for justice for him,” Karpas said.

Faggart died on April 10 after an April 7 incident in the Duval County Jail left him critically injured.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office explained that the corrections officers who were part of the incident have been moved to different roles, now working at the courthouse, in records units, or in the property and evidence unit.

Faggart’s mother shared with First Coast News that she found out about this reassignment only two weeks ago, which led her to organize Friday’s rally outside the courthouse.

“I can’t get the truth about anything,” she said.

Teagan Belloit was one of the three people arrested at Jacksonville City Council last month. “It is about Tracey and it is about Charles. They deserve better,” she said.

However, Friday, she said she showed up to stand in solidarity with Faggart’s family.

“She needs that support. She’s such a kind woman, she’s such a nice woman and she lost her son. What are we supposed to do just let that happen? I’ll stand by her because she’s a good woman,” Belloit said.

“All I want is justice for my son. I don’t want his name to die. I don’t — so I’m just out here trying to keep it going, and hoping at least the FBI can pull something off because nobody else is going to,” Karpas said.

According to the State Attorney’s Office, they’ve been in contact with the family and there are no updates for the public, due to this being an active investigation.

First Coast News also reached out to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office about Friday’s rally. We received no comment.
