The glittering series The Gilded Age is back on HBO and MAX tonight after being off the air for almost two years. This fascinating drama unfolds against the backdrop of late 19th century New York City and Newport, Rhode Island. It was an era marked by the disparity between the extraordinarily wealthy and the exceedingly poor. The show dives into the way the nouveaux riches, epitomized by the Robber Barons and their families, disrupted the conservative norms of “old New York,” which was led by the descendants of the city’s early settlers.
At the conclusion of the last season of The Gilded Age, Bertha Russell (played by Carrie Coon) had triumphantly established the Metropolitan Opera, setting it up as a rival hub for the city’s affluent society. Now, she is ambitiously looking to secure a Duke as a suitor for her treasured daughter Gladys (portrayed by Taissa Farmiga).
Meanwhile, chaos brews at the Van Rhijn residence on 61st street, as Ada (Cynthia Nixon) takes charge of the household from her elder sister Agnes (Christine Baranski). Elsewhere, Marian (Louisa Jacobson) is navigating a budding relationship with her friend Larry (Harry Richardson), and the footman Jack (Ben Ahlers) harbors aspirations of marketing his alarm clock invention.

Will There Be a Season 4 of The Gilded Age?
The Gilded Age is one of HBO’s most popular dramas, but does that necessarily mean it’s coming back for a fourth season?
Last week, DECIDER attended both a panel and a press conference for the Season 3 premiere. In both, when Gilded Age creator Julian Fellowes was asked about the possibility of a fourth season, he demurred.
âYou have as much idea as we do, that I will say,â Fellowes said before getting cheeky. âI always love it though, as I was saying yesterday, you always ask these questions, knowing youâre not going to get a decent answer. And I never really quite understand why, unless itâs just the fun of us saying weâre not going tell you! But we donât know either at the moment.”
Actress Denée Benton then made her appeal to the journalists in the room and watching over Zoom: “Please watch and help us.”
