ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Every year, heat claims the lives of hundreds across the United States. In response, the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is taking steps to ensure that a particularly at-risk group isn’t ignored.

While young children, elderly individuals, those with chronic health conditions, and pregnant individuals face elevated risks of heat-related illnesses, pets are also greatly affected by high temperatures, as emphasized by the Fire Marshal’s Office.

The key takeaway is to never leave anyone in a car unattended during intense heat. In addition to this crucial reminder, the Fire Marshal’s Office offers a few more tips to help keep your beloved pets safe and cool in the heat.

  • Watch the humidity each day
  • Limit their exercise on hot days
  • Provide lots of shade and water
  • Don’t rely on a fan to cool your pet down
  • Watch out for hot pavement

Pets that are locked inside cars could become seriously injured or die in just 10 minutes. To learn more about how to protect yourself and your pets during extreme heat, visit the National Weather Service’s website.
