Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Lacher Brockenbrough Lindsey, 32, was apprehended early this morning after reportedly taking an elderly man with dementia from a rehabilitation center without permission.

Around 4:30 p.m. on June 23, a Gainesville Police Department officer was dispatched to Park Meadows Health and Rehabilitation when a staff member reported that a patient, an elderly man with dementia, was missing. According to the staff, Lindsey arrived at the rehab center, claimed to be the man’s daughter, and inquired if the man was permitted to leave the facility.

She was instructed to notify a different staff member before removing the man from the premises; however, it is alleged that she told that staff member she was taking the man to the dining room. Instead, she purportedly placed the man in a wheelchair and exited through the front entrance. A staff member positioned at the exit questioned whether she had informed the other staff member; she affirmed that she had and subsequently transported the man to her vehicle.

When the staff member at the exit spoke with the other staff member, they found that Lindsey did not have permission to take the man off the property and called the man’s sister, who has a Power of Attorney. The victim’s sister reportedly said Lindsey is not related to the man and should not have taken the man from the rehab center.

The responding officer reported that surveillance video showed Lindsey taking the victim out of the rehab center.

Lindsey was arrested at 1:37 a.m., and post Miranda, she did not want to speak about the incident.

Lindsey has been charged with interfering with the custody of an incompetent person and kidnapping. She has six felony convictions (non-violent) and four misdemeanor convictions (non-violent) and has a Notice to Appear for a hit-and-run charge from February 2025. Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $75,000 for interfering with the custody of an incompetent person but found no probable cause for the kidnapping charge; she ordered a curfew from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and a GPS monitor.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
