1 killed in wrong-way crash on Tri-State Tollway in north suburbs; NB lanes closed to traffic

GLENVIEW, Ill. (WLS) — A fatal accident occurred on the Tri-State Tollway Wednesday morning involving a wrong-way driver, according to the Illinois State Police.

The crash occurred at about 1:54 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-294 at milepost 46.75 in Glenview.

Police said a vehicle was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when it struck another vehicle.

The wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the individuals in the other vehicle, both the driver and a passenger, were taken to a hospital to receive treatment for their injuries.

The crash had led to the closure of all northbound lanes of I-294 between Dempster Street and Willow Road. All lanes reopened around 6:45 a.m.

The crash came as heavy rain overnight led to some sloppy traffic conditions on Chicago area roads overnight.

ABC7 Accuweather Meteorologist Tracy Butler said the torrential overnight rain was easing early Wednesday, transitioning to some light rain.

High standing water led to a closure of the southbound I-294 exit ramp to West Ogden Avenue.

On I-88, a jackknifed semi was blocking two eastbound lanes just past Route 31.
