‘Self-regulation works much better’ than government overreach: John Stossel

() Too much government equals too much regulation, per longtime Libertarian journalist John Stossel, who sat down with for an hour-long special Sunday.

In his conversation with Connell McShane in “John Stossel: Give Me Liberty,” Stossel discussed President Donald Trump’s second term thus far and examined cutting federal regulations, among other topics.

From restaurant health inspections to electric car mandates to job licenses, the government has a reach in many facets of life. Trump has promised to cut regulations since his first term.

“In his first term, he claimed he would get rid of five regulations for every new one. He didn’t. But at least he says things like that, and that’s good,” Stossel said, noting he prefers self-regulation.

“Self-regulation works much better than having government bureaucrats,” he said, arguing that over-regulation has counter-productive consequences.

“It’s easier to notice how absurd regulations can be if you look at old regulations. When the Walkman came out, one town in New Jersey banned wearing them in public,” Stossel said. “Some laws stop making sense because societies and technologies change.”
