More than 140 people were transferred to buses in order to get to their final destination, officials said.

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla — On Sunday, a disabled Amtrak train left hundreds of passengers stranded, some of whom required hospitalization for heat exhaustion, as reported by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office.

Amtrak representatives stated that at approximately 10:30 a.m., Train 41 experienced a loss of head-end power and became inoperable just south of Jesup, Georgia. The Amtrak website cited a “mechanical assessment” as the cause for the train’s halt.

The train’s journey had commenced in Chicago, with Miami as the intended final stop. Numerous stops were planned along the route between the two cities, as detailed on the website.

NCSO and Nassau County Fire Rescue officials responded to the train, which was near the intersection of County Road 121 and Yellow Rose Lane.

The sheriff’s office said a few passengers were taken to a local hospital for heat exhaustion treatment due to a lack of air conditioning inside the train. The remaining passengers were then taken to the Amtrak station in Jacksonville.

Amtrak officials said 147 passengers then boarded buses taking them to their final destination around 3:45 p.m., and 72 people stayed on board the train.
