A South Carolina deputy, who completed field training just last week, was tragically shot and killed in an ambush while attempting to arrest a suspect at a residence early Tuesday, officials reported.

Deputy Devin Mason, aged 27, along with a fellow deputy, responded at approximately 1:30 a.m. to a house near Lamar to detain a wanted individual, according to a statement from the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office. As they entered the property, they were ambushed, stated the sheriff.

Mason died of his injuries while the second deputy, whose name was not immediately released, was hospitalized and in stable condition.

The suspect, 25-year-old Cameron Ray Dennett, was also fatally shot. Dennett was sought for charges related to criminal conspiracy, forgery, and a computer crime, and he was prohibited from possessing a firearm, as per the sheriff’s office.

“In his time with us, he demonstrated unwavering dedication, integrity and professionalism,” Sheriff Michael August said. “Deputy Mason served the people of Darlington County with heart and honor. Though his time with us was far too short, his impact will not be forgotten.”

No further details about the shooting were immediately provided.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.
