A tragic incident occurred when a 3-year-old boy died after apparently accidentally shooting himself with a loaded and unsecured gun he discovered while staying with his family at an Airbnb in an Atlanta suburb.
The East Point Police Department responded to a call at the home shortly after noon on Wednesday, where they found the boy with a single gunshot wound and unconscious, according to WAGA. A firearm was discovered nearby.
He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta, where he died from his wound.
The owner of the Airbnb told WSB that the family had been there for a about a week.
Police have not said who owns the firearm the boy used or what led to the shooting. It’s unclear if any charges will be filed.
Police told WXIA that the boy found the unsecured gun and “accidentally” shot himself.
East Point Police Chief Shawn Buchanan emphasized the importance of gun safety, saying, “We just want to keep stressing — it gets old — the same message every year, day after day – secure your weapons. If you can’t secure them, don’t have them.” He lamented the loss of the child’s life due to neglect.
